Hocus Pocus

Released 1993                              Rated: PG

I remember being in line for movie tickets, and seeing this poster and wanting to see this movie, and being told it would scare me. Considering how young I was at the time, that was probably true. However, this movie is awesome. Now, it’s possible not all adults will like this movie, but the kids will love it. I grew up watching it; it comes on the Disney channel every year for Halloween; it’s funny, it’s cute, and I think it’s a perfect movie for getting into the spirit of the holiday.

http://www.amazon.com/Hocus-Pocus-Movie-Poster-11/dp/B000JW1The Sanderson sisters are not about to be thwarted by the townspeople of Salem so easily. Due to a little issue of stealing children’s lives to stay young, the three sisters have earned a hanging. However, they find themselves back in town…it’s just been a while. That, in and of itself is brilliant. But what makes it even better is the fact that they just roll with it. There is no feel of “I’m in the wrong time period,” it’s all played off comically and it’s done fabulously!

Upon reading a “review” on the internet I went looking for the critics’ reviews of the movie. Apparently none of the critics liked this one, and for one pour soul it just went straight over his head. They all thought it was overacted and contained too much screeching. Um… it’s a kids’ Halloween movie, no one’s going for an Oscar here. I think it’s brilliant and not overacted at all. Everyone fits their role, from the kids trying to stop the witches, to the witches hunting down the kids, to even the cat trying to help the kids stop the witches.

I love this movie. It’s one of my favorites. I would highly recommend it if you’re looking for some clean Halloween fun. This movie is funny, crazy, and perfect. I even forgot this is a Disney film. Totally worth it.
